Kuwaiti Currency/Banknotes information

Logo courtesy to CBK
Modern paper banknotes have come a long way in the last few centuries, with most or nearly all of the countries across the world adopting it. After Kuwait's independence in 1961, the creation of its own paper banknote led to the first issue of banknotes (before that the Indian Rupee was used). Over the years, the responsibility of the issuance of banknotes and coins is that of the Central Bank of Kuwait. (CLICK HERE for the website). There has been a total of 6 issues till date. The currency of Kuwait is the Kuwaiti Dinar (KD) - (الكويتي دينار) (د.ك). The paper banknotes are divided into 6 denominations - Quarter Dinar (1/4), Half Dinar (1/2), One Dinar (1), Five Dinar (5), Ten Dinar (10) and Twenty Dinar (20).

The latest issue of the banknotes is the sixth which was put into circulation on 29 June 2014. (CLICK HERE for the article on the sixth issue on CBK website). The currency was revealed to public during the event which was held on 19 May 2014 and was taken in excitement in Kuwait as the fifth issue has been in circulation for the past 20 years since April 1994. (CLICK HERE for the article on the fifth issue on CBK website)

The fifth issue of banknotes have successfully been in circulation for the past 20 years and was nearly removed from circulation during the first 2 months of the new - sixth issue. The initial process of removal of fifth issue banknotes was by a simple process. Since the circulation came into effect on 29 June 2014 (end of the month), the people receiving salary when withdrew from the ATMs received all new banknotes and initially all deposits into the bank was only the old banknotes (fifth issue). This was a successful idea but with little downsides as people who had loan amounts or bills to be deposited into the bank account could not deposit the new banknotes through the ATM. Therefore long queues were seen at the banks - at the tellers. Soon after that all the machines were able to take in the new banknotes also. By the 2 month deadline, nearly 80-90% of the old (fifth) issue banknotes were out of circulation.

The Central Bank of Kuwait (CBK) will be officially withdrawing the Fifth issue of Kuwaiti Banknotes from circulation by 01/10/2015 (1st October 2015). What that means is that public cannot use the fifth issue currency for trading purposes or in depositing with the regular banks in Kuwait. (The funny thing is that by 15th September 2015 itself, no one was accepting the fifth issue) The life of the fifth issue is still for another 10 years in which if anyone that has a fifth issue banknote can exchange with the Central Bank of Kuwait. For any kind of damage banknotes and exchange of banknotes can be done at the Banking Hall of the Central Bank of Kuwait.

The internet has a lot of articles and blog posts with regard to the new banknotes. I still remember people around Kuwait showing off the new banking notes on the 29th June 2014. Lots of comments about how the new banknotes were different and might not look good, but now everyone is using it daily without any issue and nearly have forgotten the old. The video below is presented by the Central Bank of Kuwait about the new banknotes and was video was created with the help of Cinemagic.

BBC covered a story about the company responsible for printing of the New Kuwaiti Banknotes (6th Issue). I came to know that the banknotes have atleast 25 security features out of which few were mentioned to the public and across Kuwait Business. Some of the features have been reserved by Central Bank of Kuwait to thwart counterfeiters.

    Kuwait Central Blood Bank Updated

    UPDATE (16/11/2021)
Locations of the various Blood banks across Kuwait.

    (10/04/2012) Post

Kuwait's health system is something we can talk about which will lead to many posts. But for this particular post, I would like to talk about the Central Blood Bank which is located in Jabriya next to Mubarak Al-Kabeer Hospital. I have been to the blood bank on many occasions, not on the receiving side but to give blood. My friends and me used to give blood when we were studying at college in India and it kind of became a habit. One fine day, I dropped by at the Kuwait Central Blood Bank after I was able to located it on Google Maps. There is sufficient parking available and also one can get down (By Bus) at Al-Bahar Center, Tunis Street, Hawally and walk 200 meters to the Blood Bank. The timings for the Blood bank are as follows:
    • Sunday - Thursday - 7 am to 8:30 pm
    • Friday - 1 pm to 7 pm
    • Saturday - 7 am to 7 pm
The process of giving blood is simple for first timers or for regular donors. Once you enter, you just have to give your Civil ID card so that they can check their system. For first timers, they will ask you to give some basic information like phone number and language of preference for answering the questionnaire. My language preference is entered as English so whenever I give my civil ID they just print out the questionnaire in English for me, while for my friends who opted for Arabic it prints out in Arabic every single time (unless you feel like changing it). Once I answer the basic questions (look below for the sample of the questionnaire), my blood pressure, Blood sugar and body temperature is monitored and entered into the system. If the values are other than normal, then you can visit the doctors in the next cabin to get a free consultation. Once you enter the blood donation room, it is time to sit back and relax and let the nurses take care of the process. It varies from 5- 25 minutes. During that time you can browse through your smart phone , no restrictions applied here for the phones. You get a complimentary juice (KDD). One can return back, to give blood after a period of 2-4 months. Also many government bodies and companies organize Blood Donation Camps once in a while on their own premises (under the watchful eye of the Kuwait Central Blood Bank or the Ministry of Health), one can give during those campaigns.

Platelet donors requirements - Age above 17 years and the weight of the person should be above 50 kgs. Also the interested donor should not be taking painkillers or antibiotics for 5 days before the donation process.
Blood Platelets donation is the second type of donation done at the Blood Bank, where the platelets are drawn through the separator device and the rest of the blood components are restored/returned to the donor. Usually done in Room No 5. Once the screening process is finished and the blood test report, Blood Pressure and other preliminary checks are done and verified. The donor is given a green signal for a go ahead for Platelet donations which can last up 90 minutes. So advice is to get a book to read or atleast charge your phones & get used to using it with a single hand.
