Kuwait Cooperative Society

Kuwait Cooperative Society (aka Kuwait Co-ops/ Jamiyahs / جمعية) is a everyday term used in Kuwait as it is a departmental store which is within reach of nearly every persons that resides in Kuwait. Private departmental stores have existed since long in Kuwait's history. Kuwait first tasted consumer cooperative stores during the 1940s & 1950s when it was implemented in the school environment of Al Mubarakiya School & Salah Al-Din school, Shamiya.

After the above successes, more attempts were made in creating more co-ops and when the constitution of Kuwait was implemented after the independence in 1961, Issuance of law no 20 in 1962, had texts added on establishments of cooperative societies, memberships, management, control, liquidation & dissolving. They function more like a Semi-governmental entity where they function independently with their own administrations but is kept in watch by the government through Ministry of Social Affairs & Labour (MOSAL). In 1971, the Union of Consumer Cooperative Societies (KUCCS) came into existence as the number of cooperative societies kept on increasing.

In Kuwait, each Cooperative society is divided by the areas (whenever a new area is built a new cooperative society comes into existence). Each Cooperative society has a main branch, which is built on the commercial area allocated by government within an area. All the shops within that campus is also administered by the Cooperative society. The shops within the campus usually are variety that the cooperative cannot cater, example, a barber shop, florist, live poultry shop, branded fast food joints. If the size of the area is big, the cooperative society has multiple branches within the area. These are readily accessible to all the residents within the area. Some branches are on small campuses with a few other shops which too are administered by the cooperative society. Ministry of Interior & Ministry of Defense also their own cooperative society.

5G in Kuwait

Kuwait officially kicks off 5G network today - 15th June 2019. This comes after the Pilot operation of the fifth generation mobile operator networks completed successfully their trials. The chairman and CEO of the Communication and Information Technology Regulatory Authority (CITRA) Engineer Salem Al-Ozainah announced on 28th May 2019. (CLICK HERE to read the official article).

CITRA has approved the additional spectrum in the existing LTE frequency range and new millimeter wave bands (24-86 GHz), which can support data rates of up to 20 gigabits per second. (CLICK HERE to read the official article).

What does it all mean for Kuwait? First and foremost 5G for Kuwait means faster internet speed. For now (15/06/2019), all three network operators will be matching their packages, approximately KD 45 per month for 1 TB of data along with providing a 5G compatible Router.

CITRA has been keeping a watchful eye over the whole 5G network subject and its operators. On 17/06/2019, CITRA reminded all the operators of the commitments they made with the Regulatory in the year 2014 & 2015 about fair market competitions and pricing. More options were brought in the picture with amount options of KD 25 and KD 26 monthly with 2 year commitments with lower data packages.

Kuwait's ambition for High Speed Internet

Kuwait's thirst for faster internet speed has been growing. All the Service providers are moving in that direction, be it Fiber Optic cables or 5G networks. CLICK HERE to read the article about projects being executed towards that direction.

Ministry of Communication has been upping their game with Fiber Optic cable replacements of older cable networks in existing cities and installation of fiber optics in all newer cities. This is already helping in increasing the current 10 -14 Mbps to even more higher speed of 50-100 Mbps speeds. Current internet plans by the different Internet Service Providers (ISP) are as below (as of 5th January 2019).

With the Landline ISPs moving ahead in the game, the Mobile ISPs have also been eyeing the 5G networks,  with current speeds of 21 Mbps to 42 Mbps being provided on the 4G networks. Lots of Offer packages are out on all of ISPs.

The whole setup for the skydive has been prepared in the South of Kuwait, away from the hustle and bustle of the Kuwaiti Skyline. The official drop-zone is away from industrial areas and utilities making it an ideal place for carrying out skydiving. Another amazing feature during the skydive is the backdrop, in which one can see Khiran Seaside City (Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Seaside City) with its inland waterways. It sets apart when one captures it during the skydive.

The runway, the skydive landing area, the preparation area and the plane hanger, all have been newly setup with the sole purpose of skydiving. Cessna 208 Caravan aircraft is the flight used for the skydive, which will let skydiver jump from the height of 13,000 feet in the air. All the tandem rigs and equipment for the one time skydive experience is ready and waiting for the skydive enthusiasts. The tandem jumps can be carried out with male or female instructors.
